Lufthansa Group has opened bookings for its Summer 2026 flight schedule, offering cargo solutions providers access to one of the world’s most extensive air freight networks. With over 14,000 weekly connections to 330 destinations across 100 countries, the expansion creates new capacity opportunities for freight forwarders booking through the group’s seven airline brands.

Network Expansion Across Seven Airlines

The group’s summer schedule brings significant route additions through Lufthansa Airlines, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Edelweiss, ITA Airways, and Discover Airlines. Operating from hubs in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, and Italy, the network provides freight forwarders with diverse routing options for complex multi-leg shipments.

Lufthansa Airlines leads the expansion with multiple new long-haul routes from Frankfurt and Munich. Frankfurt adds service to St. Louis, Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town, Raleigh/Durham, Washington, and Nairobi with daily frequencies. The airline will also launch four times weekly service to Trondheim, Norway starting May 1, 2026.

Munich strengthens its position as a southern European gateway with new year-round service to São Paulo and Johannesburg, both operating three times weekly using modern Airbus A350-900 aircraft. These routes open new capacity for freight forwarders serving South American and African trade lanes.

African Capacity Growth

Brussels Airlines continues expanding its African network, adding Kilimanjaro, Tanzania as its 18th destination in sub-Saharan Africa. The new route launches in June 2026 with twice-weekly service, providing cargo solutions providers with additional options for East African shipments.

The carrier is also increasing frequencies to Freetown from five to six weekly flights, responding to demand on West African routes. This capacity increase gives freight forwarders more flexibility when booking to and from these markets.

Edelweiss enters the southern African market with a new twice-weekly service to Windhoek, Namibia from June 2026. Combined with Lufthansa’s five times weekly Frankfurt-Cape Town service, the group significantly strengthens capacity to southern Africa.

European and Mediterranean Routes

SWISS adds Poznan, Poland to its network starting March 29, 2026, and will operate seasonal service to Rijeka, Croatia during July and August. These routes provide freight forwarders with new door-to-door (D2D) options for Central European and Adriatic destinations.

ITA Airways resumes the Rome Fiumicino-London Heathrow route with twice-daily service, restoring a key European connection that offers cargo solutions providers reliable airport-to-airport (A2A) capacity between Italy and the UK.

Discover Airlines expands its network with first-time service to Shannon, Ireland and Brindisi, Italy, plus daily flights to Larnaca, Cyprus. The additions increase routing options for freight forwarders serving secondary European markets.

Route Reductions on German Feeders

Despite the expansion, Lufthansa Airlines will reduce more than 50 frequencies on feeder routes to and from Germany due to high operational costs. The reductions affect domestic connections including Munich-Cologne and Frankfurt-Leipzig.

The airline is also discontinuing select routes including Frankfurt-Toulouse, Munich-Tallinn, and Munich-Oviedo. These changes reflect economic pressures facing German aviation, with the carrier prioritising profitable long-haul routes over loss-making domestic services.

Fleet Deployment and A380 Continuation

Initial Summer 2026 schedules loaded without A380 aircraft assignments, creating uncertainty among industry observers about the superjumbo’s future. However, aircraft assignments were updated in late October 2025, confirming A380 service continues through 2030 at least.

Routes like Munich-Boston had A380 service restored in the updated schedules. The four-engine aircraft provides substantial belly cargo capacity on high-demand routes, valuable for freight forwarders booking large shipments.

Cargo Schedule Reliability

Operational flight schedules covering the network show over 30 round-trip flights weekly on key cargo routes. Destinations across Africa and the Middle East operate with Boeing 777 aircraft, offering consistent belly cargo capacity for freight forwarders.

The schedules cover defined periods with regular updates, though carriers recommend verifying current information as assignments remain subject to change. This dynamic scheduling requires freight forwarders to confirm capacity availability when quoting complex routes.

What This Means for Freight Forwarders

The Summer 2026 expansion provides cargo solutions providers with:

  • Increased capacity to South America, Africa, and secondary European markets
  • New routing options for multi-leg shipments through seven airline brands
  • Consistent schedules on key trade lanes with modern, fuel-efficient aircraft
  • Multiple daily frequencies on high-demand routes like Frankfurt-Washington (14 times weekly)
  • Expanded D2D coverage with new destinations in Poland, Croatia, Tanzania, and Namibia

Booking Timeline

The full Summer 2026 schedule is now available for booking across all Lufthansa Group airlines. While initial schedules appeared as placeholders without complete aircraft assignments, updated versions released in late October 2025 provide confirmed capacity details.

Freight forwarders should note that schedules remain dynamic, particularly on new routes where frequencies may adjust based on demand. Regular schedule checks ensure accurate quoting when building complex, multi-carrier routes.

Network Position

With 330 destinations across 100 countries, Lufthansa Group operates Europe’s largest airline network. The summer schedule balances expansion on profitable long-haul routes with reductions on cost-intensive domestic feeders.

For SME freight forwarders competing with larger operators, this extensive network provides access to global capacity without territory restrictions. The group’s seven-airline structure offers routing flexibility for complicated multi-leg shipments that require mixed-mode or multi-carrier solutions.

330Destinations across seven airline brands

The Summer 2026 schedule represents Lufthansa Group’s continued commitment to network breadth despite economic headwinds affecting German aviation. Cargo solutions providers gain valuable capacity on growth markets while adapting to reduced feeder frequencies on domestic routes.
